Expansion without a Headquarters: Households, Roads, Women Coworkers, and Letters in Early Christian Mission
Christianity's movement from a Jewish Jerusalem group into Mediterranean cities was neither Paul's solo master plan nor an automatic gift of Roman roads. Migration, household hospitality, synagogue ties, artisanal labor, women's patronage, public reading of letters, and negotiated conflict formed the network. By the late first century it remained a limited, diverse minority with locally varying relations to Jewish communities.
From Jerusalem Resurrection Proclamation to a Mixed Antioch Community
The earliest movement proclaimed that Jesus, executed by Rome, had risen and would complete Israel's hope as Messiah. A tradition formula preserved by Paul in the 50s predates Gospels and Acts and lists appearances to Cephas, the Twelve, James, and apostles. It ties authority to resurrection witness without giving an organizational charter. Acts shapes Pentecost, three thousand baptisms, and miraculous languages as theological origin. History can establish an early Jerusalem assembly continuing Jewish life, but narrative numbers cannot yield an exact membership count for one day.
Acts explains expansion through a relief dispute between “Hebrews” and “Hellenists,” Stephen's death, and dispersion toward Samaria and Antioch. Speeches combine Lukan composition and tradition, and local violence cannot be extrapolated into an imperial policy. Yet conflict-driven migration is socially plausible. Diaspora Jews and migrants from Cyprus and Cyrene preached to wider audiences at Antioch; Jerusalem sent Barnabas, who later brought Paul. The tradition that “Christians” was first used there reflects a mixed association becoming externally recognizable as a different social formation.
How Pauline Networks Worked: Coworkers, Labor, Money, and Portable Texts
Paul was not a solitary traveler. His letters name Barnabas, Silas, Timothy, Titus, Prisca and Aquila, Phoebe, Junia, Epaphras, and other coworkers who carried letters, hosted groups, represented him in crises, and developed leadership. Phoebe is called deacon of Cenchreae and patron of many and likely carried and interpreted Romans. Prisca is repeatedly named before her husband, indicating women's teaching and household authority. Later male office structures often made this evidence less visible, but women cannot be reduced to helpers.
Teams used shipping, Roman roads, kin, and commerce while facing shipwreck, robbery, illness, prison, and cost. Paul worked at tentmaking or leather craft and accepted or refused support to negotiate apostolic independence. Households supplied meeting space, but a “house church” could include enslaved people, freed persons, clients, and neighbors, not an egalitarian living room. Envoys delivered letters for public reading into concrete disputes over factions, sexuality, idol food, gifts, and unequal meals. The intercity collection for Jerusalem was relief and a political-theological demonstration that Gentile churches remained in communion with Israel's mother group.
Multiple Missions, Slow Growth, and Uneven Jewish–Christian Differentiation
Paul's letters are richest, not proof that Paul alone missionized. Peter focused on the circumcised, Apollos worked within Alexandrian and Ephesus-Corinth networks, and Jesus' brother James led Jerusalem. Anonymous merchants, enslaved people, soldiers, women, and migrating households may have carried more everyday transmission than famous apostles. Acts orders routes as Spirit-led movement from Jerusalem to Rome; later traditions assign apostles to India, Armenia, Egypt, and elsewhere. Some may preserve early links, but detailed itineraries and martyrdoms mostly occur in second-century or later texts and do not equal Paul's letters as evidence.
Synagogues offered contact with God-fearing Gentiles and scriptural discussion, but Acts' repeated pattern of synagogue first, rejection, then Gentiles is also theological construction. In different cities Jesus-followers remained within Jewish networks, were excluded from some synagogues, or organized separate households. The Temple's destruction in 70 did not create two mature religions in one day. Nero's executions at Rome were a local political crisis, and persecution before Decius was intermittent and regional. By around 100 groups crossed several provinces but remained a small minority; hindsight's rapid conquest story ignores slow growth, defection, and unwritten local difference.

Why Did Early Christianity Spread—Miracle and Mission, Roman Mobility, or Social Networks?
Christian tradition treats resurrection witness and experience of the Spirit as fundamental, with martyr courage, healing, and a transethnic message explaining action.
Infrastructure accounts stress common Greek, shipping, roads, and urbanization, though the same conditions served many religions and cannot explain selection of this message.
Social-network models emphasize kin, household, trade, women's patronage, and migrant trust, making conversion travel through existing ties rather than anonymous mass publicity.
These levels are compatible. Belief supplied content and reasons for risk; transport set reach; relationships determined hearing, hospitality, and persistence. First-century numbers are too sparse for precise growth curves. The best account is cumulative expansion by small, polycentric networks through crisis, migration, and textual copying, not one centrally planned imperial campaign.
