Armed Pilgrimage, Conquest Society, and Rival Memories: Why Crusading Was Never Simply Faith or Profit

Crusading fused penance, pilgrimage, and papal authorization into a repeatable institution of war. It produced the Jerusalem massacre, catastrophe for Rhineland Jews, Latin conquest states, and the sack of Constantinople, alongside diplomacy, trade, and mixed life. Motives, Muslim responses, and modern memories were diverse and require Latin, Arabic, Byzantine, and Jewish evidence in combination.

How the Call of 1095 Turned War into Penitential Pilgrimage

Eleventh-century western Europe already knew Peace of God movements, papal support for Iberian warfare, and expanding Holy Land pilgrimage; Byzantium sought western manpower after Manzikert. At Clermont in 1095 Urban II called for aid to eastern Christians and movement toward Jerusalem, promising remission of penalties through a penitential undertaking. Surviving speech versions were written later and differ, so their most inflammatory lines are not recordings. Yet letters and vows establish that the cross sign, pilgrim status, and spiritual reward were foundational rather than later decoration on an ordinary war.

Respondents included magnates, knights, retainers, clergy, women, and poor people, not simply landless younger sons. Expedition was so costly that many mortgaged or sold property, and death risk makes easy profit an inadequate model. Yet family honor, rivalry, debt, possible land, and adventure coexisted with devotion. In 1096 poorly organized popular forces attacked Jewish communities at Speyer, Worms, Mainz, and elsewhere, forcing conversion and killing. Some bishops attempted protection but failed, showing how an enemy imagination directed toward a distant holy place could turn against European neighbors.

From the First Crusade to Saladin: Conquest, Settlement, and Muslim Reorganization

Main armies crossed Byzantine territory under ambiguous oaths to restore former imperial cities. They took Antioch in 1098, where famine, faction, and visions of the Holy Lance helped sustain morale. After breaching Jerusalem in July 1099, crusaders killed many Muslim and Jewish residents. Latin chronicles celebrated bloodshed in religious victory language, though numbers are often rhetorical. The resulting kingdom of Jerusalem and principalities of Antioch, Tripoli, and Edessa relied on castles, ports, Italian merchants, and European reinforcement while governing local Christians, Muslims, and Jews who greatly outnumbered Latin settlers.

Muslim politics did not initially respond as one “jihad civilization.” Seljuk rulers, Fatimid Egypt, Syrian cities, and local lords competed and sometimes allied with Franks against Muslims; Latin rulers likewise made truces, exchanged captives, and traded. Zengi's recovery of Edessa in 1144 triggered the Second Crusade, while Nur al-Din linked jihad language to political consolidation. Saladin united Egypt and Syria, defeated the Latin army at Hattin in 1187, and recovered Jerusalem. The Third Crusade let Richard I regain coastal positions but ended by treaty rather than siege, permitting Christian pilgrims into Muslim-held Jerusalem.

1204, the Expansion of Crusading Institutions, and the Long Afterlife beyond 1291

The Fourth Crusade, driven by transport debt, Venetian interests, and a Byzantine succession struggle, attacked Zara and in 1204 captured and looted Constantinople, killing eastern Christians, stealing relics, and forming a Latin Empire. This was not an inevitable fulfillment of Urban's plan. The pope opposed attacks on Christians but later accepted parts of the result; vows, contracts, and dynastic politics repeatedly redirected the expedition. Later campaigns targeted Egypt and North Africa, while the Children's Crusade became a popular disaster. Papal privileges were also applied in Iberia, the Baltic, against Albigensian Christians, and against political enemies, making crusade a portable legal, fiscal, and spiritual technology.

Mamluks captured Acre in 1291, ending major Latin rule in Syria-Palestine, but crusading institutions continued for centuries in Cyprus, Rhodes, the Baltic, and Ottoman frontiers. Calling the Latin East colonial highlights minority settlement, land privilege, and religious hierarchy, yet nineteenth-century racial-state colonialism cannot simply be projected backward. Intermarriage, borrowed language, and legal negotiation did not remove conquest inequality. European romanticism and colonialism, Arab nationalism, Islamism, and anti-Muslim politics later reconstructed “the crusades” selectively. Analysis must distinguish medieval action, later memory, and current labels without letting one community's trauma erase another's dead.

Debate

Were Crusades Driven Primarily by Piety, Material Interest, or Proto-Colonialism?
Religious-motivation scholarship emphasizes vows, penance, holy places, wills, enormous cost, bankruptcy, and death, all incompatible with a simple profit model.
Sociopolitical interpretation stresses lordly rivalry, violent culture, family strategy, commerce, and land, noting that pious language could legitimate existing ambitions.
Colonial framing notes foreign minority rule, land control, and hierarchy; critics warn against projecting the full modern colonial state, race, and capital system backward.

Motives are not sealed options with fixed percentages. A noble could sincerely seek penance and family honor; merchants could profit without setting an expedition's goal; negotiated coexistence could occur within unequal conquest. Analysis must distinguish why individuals joined, how institutions mobilized, why armies diverted, and how settlement worked, testing each through multiple archives instead of ending with “all religion” or “all plunder.”

Debate

Were crusades religious wars or economic expansion?
Older accounts emphasized greed
Recent work stresses vows

Motives varied; religion was not mere disguise

Caliphal symbol and sultanic power separate

Buyid and Seljuk sultans held military power while Abbasid caliphs retained legitimacy; Fatimids offered a rival Shia caliphate. Trade

  2. 02
Crusade and Mongol conquest destroy and reorganize

Crusaders took Jerusalem amid Muslim division; later rulers mobilized unity and jihad. Mongols destroyed Baghdad in 1258

Catastrophe shifted political centers and legitimacy without ending civilization.

  3. 03
Sufi orders connect local piety to long-distance networks

Ascetic practice developed orders around masters

Expansion also relied on social ties and local translation

Debate

Does Sufism represent “moderate Islam”?
Modern discourse often opposes spiritual Sufism to legal-political Islam.
Historically Sufis were often jurists and could support states

Sufism is a set of practices and institutions

Hillenbrand shows Near Eastern Muslim societies were not monolithic. 1096 Rhineland massacres of Jews are key internal European religious violence.
