From City of the Passion to a Shared Multi-Church Holy Place: Christian Jerusalems across Time

For Christianity Jerusalem is the setting of Jesus' passion and resurrection, a memory center of the earliest church, the origin point of pilgrimage maps, and a site of crusading violence and modern sovereignty conflict. Archaeological layers, liturgical routes, and divided custodianship show that a holy place is not static background but a historical space repeatedly produced through destruction, rebuilding, translation, and contest.

01

The City of Jesus, the Execution Site, and the Earliest Community

First-century Jerusalem was dominated by Herod's expanded Temple. Passover brought large pilgrim crowds, and the Roman prefect normally came from Caesarea to maintain order. The Gospels place Jesus' final week between entry, Temple action, controversy, last meal, arrest, and Roman crucifixion. Historians generally locate the execution authorized by Pilate outside the then walls near a road at Golgotha, but whether the trial occurred at the Antonia or Herod's palace, and whether each later Via Dolorosa station matches events, cannot be fully established from text and archaeology.

Paul's letters attest a Jerusalem assembly led by Peter, James, and others and supported by collections from distant churches; Acts locates Pentecost, common property, and apostolic consultation in the city. The Jewish war of 66–70 ended in Temple and urban destruction. A later church-history claim that all Jesus-followers escaped to Pella cannot be accepted without qualification. After the Bar Kokhba war, Hadrian refounded the city as Aelia Capitolina and restricted Jewish entry. A Gentile-led episcopate then marks institutional discontinuity from the first-century Jewish assembly; an unbroken list cannot be assumed to preserve every original structure.

Constantine's Building Revolution and the Evidence for the Holy Sepulchre

Constantine's fourth-century policy remade Aelia into a Christian pilgrimage center. Eusebius says imperial workers removed a Roman structure associated with Aphrodite and found a rock-cut tomb identified as Jesus' burial place. The Holy Sepulchre complex was built after about 326 and dedicated in 335. The area lay outside first-century walls and contained early tombs, making the geography plausible. Local memory may have survived Roman covering, or the site may have been identified anew. Archaeology supports an ancient burial area consistent with Gospel location; no inscription proves one tomb belonged to Jesus.

Holy Sepulchre, Mount of Olives, Bethlehem, and Mount Zion became a liturgically connected biblical topography. The Bordeaux pilgrim and Egeria record routes and worship, showing Scripture organizing urban space in return. Persian conquest in 614, Muslim rule from 638, al-Hakim's destruction of the Sepulchre in 1009, and Byzantine-funded rebuilding repeatedly altered buildings and access without erasing local Greek, Syriac, Armenian, and Arabic-speaking Christians. A story of western pilgrims “discovering” holy places makes long-resident eastern Christians disappear.

03

Crusader Conquest, Confessional Custody, and Modern Sovereignty

Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, massacred many Muslim and Jewish inhabitants, and established a Latin kingdom. Major elements of the Holy Sepulchre's present layout date to crusader reconstruction. Saladin retook the city in 1187, allowing eastern Christian presence and gradually some western pilgrimage. Calling crusade simply “liberation” erases violence; calling it greed in religious disguise ignores the genuine mobilizing force of armed pilgrimage, penance, and apocalyptic imagination. The holy city was simultaneously devotional goal, political capital, and economic node.

Under Ottoman rule, churches repeatedly disputed space and hours at the Sepulchre. An eighteenth- and nineteenth-century “Status Quo” froze principal Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, and Roman Catholic rights, with smaller Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopian claims; even a ladder, keys, repairs, or procession could become diplomatic. British rule, the divided city after 1948, and Israeli control of East Jerusalem and the Old City from 1967 placed holy-site governance amid Israeli sovereignty claims, Palestinian national claims, and international dispute. Religious history must hold sacred attachment, local Christian life, and unequal politics together without theologizing one side's natural ownership.

Debate

Is the Holy Sepulchre Jesus' Actual Burial Site, and Does Sacred Meaning Depend on Archaeological Proof?
Supporters note a first-century quarry and tomb zone outside the walls, later covered by Roman construction; plausible geography and possible continuity make it the strongest candidate.
Cautious scholars note that explicit location evidence is fourth-century, after two major refoundations, with no proof of unbroken memory or inscription naming the tomb's occupant.
Some nineteenth-century Protestants favored the Garden Tomb because it fit modern expectations of a quiet garden and skull-like hill; its archaeological dating generally makes it a weaker first-century candidate.

Existing evidence makes the Holy Sepulchre the strongest traditional candidate geographically and archaeologically, not a demonstrated individual tomb. For communities, sacred meaning also arises from centuries of worship, mourning, and memory and need not masquerade as forensic proof. Historical presentation, however, cannot let sanctity cancel evidentiary questions. The two questions are related but not identical.

A city layered by water, kingship, temples, destruction, and reinterpretation

Jerusalem did not possess all its later sacred meanings from the beginning, nor is it merely an archaeological test of the “City of David.” It grew from a small highland city by a water source into Judah's capital and temple center, then passed through Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman rule. Each destruction and rebuilding altered the physical city and was woven into Jewish memories of Zion, exile, and return.

01

From Canaanite town to Davidic dynastic center

Jerusalem sits on Judah's highland ridge, with early settlement dependent on the Gihon spring and defensible but constricted slopes. Bronze Age defenses and water installations show a city before Israelite monarchy. In the fourteenth-century BCE Amarna letters, Abdi-Heba of Urusalim appeals to Egypt, revealing a Canaanite city-state within Egyptian power. Archaeology establishes long occupation but does not directly verify every later biblical episode.

Second Samuel says David captured the Jebusite city, made it a capital not wholly owned by an older tribe, brought in the ark, and founded a dynastic center. The choice had political logic: between Judah and northern groups, it could become the new dynasty's own territory. The Tel Dan inscription supports a later dynasty named for David, but tenth-century urban size, palace construction, and territorial reach remain disputed. A dynasty does not prove the full biblical imperial scale.

02

First Temple, Assyrian crisis, and Babylonian destruction

Kings presents Solomon's temple and palace as the decisive centralization of Jerusalem. The site lies on today's highly sensitive Temple Mount, where modern excavation cannot directly reconstruct the tenth-century building. Study must combine texts, regional temple comparisons, and urban layers while marking inference. After the northern kingdom's fall, refugees and administration probably drove major eighth-century expansion; western-hill walls, neighborhoods, and scribal objects show increasing Judahite state capacity.

In 701 BCE Sennacherib destroyed many Judean towns but did not take Jerusalem. Assyrian inscriptions say Hezekiah was shut up “like a bird in a cage” and paid tribute; the Bible credits divine intervention. Together they attest crisis and survival while interpreting them differently. A water tunnel associated with Hezekiah brought Gihon water inside for defense, though phases require epigraphic and archaeological study. Survival strengthened confidence in Zion's inviolability, against which Jeremiah later argued.

Babylon breached Jerusalem in 586 BCE, burned temple and palace, dismantled walls, and deported part of the population. Destruction layers and demographic decline support catastrophe, but not a uniformly empty landscape overnight. The fall ended effective Davidic rule and forced tradition to explain why a chosen city could fail. Lamentations, Jeremiah, and Kings answer through grief, culpability, and imperial reality; the political center became a lost center remembered and prayed toward from afar.

03

The Second Temple city and Roman remaking

The Second Temple was completed around 515 BCE, but Jerusalem's population and walls recovered slowly. In Hellenistic and Hasmonean times the city expanded, and priestly families, pilgrimage, and contributions made the sanctuary a transregional Jewish hub. Herod the Great massively enlarged the platform from the late first century BCE with huge masonry, porticoes, and facilities. The present Western Wall is part of the platform's retaining system, not the Holy of Holies itself. Monumentality served worship and a kingship dependent on Rome.

The revolt of 66 combined factional conflict with Roman siege; Titus's forces took the city and burned the temple in 70, ending sacrifice. The Tenth Legion remained, and part of Jerusalem became a military zone. After the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132–135, Hadrian rebuilt it as Aelia Capitolina with Roman streets, temples, and colonial institutions and sharply restricted Jewish residence. Jerusalem again became both an inaccessible physical city and a directional center sustained through prayer, scripture, and festival.

Debate

Was tenth-century Jerusalem large enough to support the biblical “united monarchy”?
Higher-scale reconstructions combine monumental structures, defenses, and the later “House of David” inscription to infer substantial early administration.
Lower chronology and cautious models date much monumental building later, see a smaller tenth-century settlement, and regard the imperial picture as later magnification.

Long occupation and a probable Davidic dynastic core are firmer than imperial borders or building attributions. Because the Temple Mount is not conventionally excavated and slopes were disturbed by later construction, each date and inference must be marked. A dynasty does not validate every narrative, and evidentiary gaps do not make the city nonexistent.
