Conversion crisis, Inquisition, and royal unification
The 1492 decree rested on a century of conversion, suspicion, and royal consolidation. Understanding Spanish Expulsion of the Jews (1492) begins with the pressures of its setting. Jews lived under Muslim and Christian rule, with legal status, exchange, opportunity, and danger varying sharply by place and period. Conquest placed many Jews in one political-linguistic zone. Geonic responsa made the Bavli transregional. Jews used Arabic in scholarship and trade while living under protected but subordinate status. Legal authority crossed borders
The historical evidence for Spanish Expulsion of the Jews (1492) indicates: On 31 March 1492, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon issued the Alhambra Decree, requiring openly practicing Jews to accept baptism or leave by that summer. It followed the fall of Granada and continued the Inquisition's scrutiny of converts after its establishment in 1478. The stated aim was to prevent contact that might lead New Christians to Judaize, linking expulsion to a broader politics of confessional uniformity. Numbers cannot be fixed precisely. Some converted, while others moved through Portugal, North Africa, Italian states, and Ottoman lands. Portugal's forced conversion of 1497 caused further movement. Sephardi communities rebuilt around cities such as Salonica, Constantinople, Smyrna, and Safed, carrying Ladino, commercial networks, print, and rabbinic learning. The event was not a simple end to an uninterrupted golden age. Jewish life under Muslim and Christian rule alike included cooperation, protection, discrimination, violence, and local variation. What distinguished 1492 was the close joining of monarchy, inquisition, territorial consolidation, and population classification.
The violence and conversions of 1391 created Old/New Christian suspicion, while the Inquisition established in 1478 chiefly judged baptized Christians; the 1492 edict escalated a long process.
The Alhambra Decree, forced sales, and routes of departure
Only months separated decree from deadline, forcing families to choose conversion, forced sale, or departure. Under Muslim rule, Jewish communities participated in an Arabic intellectual world while holding protected but subordinate status. Geonic responsa, poetry, philosophy, and Maimonides' legal work crossed regions. The label “golden age” captures cultural achievement but can hide taxation, instability, and episodes of persecution. Latin Christian Europe combined trade, scholarship, and communal autonomy with crusader violence, libels, coercion, and expulsion. Rashi's commentary became foundational, while the 1492 expulsion dispersed Sephardi communities. Neither uninterrupted harmony nor uninterrupted persecution explains this varied history. Synagogues, charity, ransoming, marriage contracts, partnerships, and responsa sustained dispersed life. Protection and autonomy were conditional, so city-level letters, courts, and tax records are better measures than civilizational labels.

Under deadline pressure, exiles sold property and moved toward Portugal, North Africa, Italy, and Ottoman lands, while others converted and stayed; any total requires method and uncertainty.
Ladino, Ottoman networks, and a theology of exile
The communal meaning of Spanish Expulsion of the Jews (1492) is not identical to a historiographical conclusion. Sephardi tradition remembers 1492 as a major rupture, often layering it onto the Tisha B'Av season of mourning for destroyed temples. Surnames, remembered towns, synagogue rites, Ladino songs, and exile poetry preserve Spain, yet identity was repeatedly remade in Ottoman, North African, Italian, Dutch, and American settings. Rabbinic authorities addressed conversion, marriage, inheritance, missing relatives, and competing local customs. Print networks and sixteenth-century Safed reshaped law, liturgy, and redemption language. Exile was therefore both trauma and institutional creativity; neither victimhood alone nor a triumphal diaspora story is sufficient. Christian memories also changed. Earlier confessional narratives justified unity, while modern Catholic and Spanish discussions increasingly acknowledge coercion and antisemitism. In 2015 Spain created a citizenship route for some Sephardi descendants. Such later symbolic repair shows that 1492 remains active memory, but does not cancel the original loss.
Understanding Spanish Expulsion of the Jews (1492) requires both its material consequences and the limits of evidence. Same year as Granada's fall symbolically; Inquisition and convert-suspicion chains are long processes. Ruderman on later Sephardi geographic remaking.
Ladino, local rites, and synagogue names recalling Spanish cities preserved exile memory, yet Sephardi life absorbed Ottoman, North African, and European settings rather than freezing in time.
